The Sandgate Dandling Song was from an old tune called Dollia, to which the fiddle player Robert Nunn later added words. Originally called the Sandgate Wife's Nurse Song, over the years it has become better known as the Sandgate Dandling Song (dandling - to bounce an infant upon one's knee). Sandgate was a colourful area of Newscastle by the swing bridge on the river, wher the Keelmen used to frequent the local hostelries. Stan Kelly used the tune for the 'Liverpool Lullaby' in the 1960's.
